An Evening Obligation
They
made their mark in history,
Violence and love.
It was early December
In Pozuelo de Alarcón.
Death and life came face to fact,
A duel between hate and pardon.
A cruel war, a longed for peace
Blood, pain and martyrdom,
Joy, testimony, resurrection.
The fields were the paten
Four virgins, the offering.
Their sole defense:
Oil reserved to the full in their lamps
All through long nights
Given over to service and prayer.
The gunshots fired bluntly
But they remained but an echo
For the victory of forgiveness
And the pledge entrusted
Overcame their blast.
The clearing blue sky revealed
What the night only partially showed.
As a trophy for the martyrs,
Four palms on that night of December 6
